Essential Oils

With the term essential oil we refer to a volatile concentrated liquid extracted from plants through distillation, often by using steam (or through mechanical expression for the citrus fruits). An essential oil is a compound substance, which can contain up to 250 different particles.

There are 8 broader categories of aroma plants, which provide us with essential oils:

1. LABIATAE: Lavender, Thyme, Oregano, Mint, Rosemary e.t.c.
2. DAPHNOIDES: Daphne, Cinnamon, Ravensara, Ho wood e.t.c.
3. MYRTACEAE: Eucalyptus, Carnation, Myrtle, Melaleuca, Niaouli, Tea tree, Cajeput
4. ASTEROIDS: Chamomile Roman, Helichrysum, Moroccan Chamomile e.t.c.
5. POALES (Cymbopogon): Lemongrass, Palmarosa, Citronella
6. UMBELLIFERS: Carrot, Fennel, Dill, Cardamom, Ajowan
7. PINALES: (Pinacae ή Abietacea): Pine, Fir, Black Spruce
8. RUE or CITRUS: Lemon, Mandarin, Bergamot, Bitter Orange

An essential oil should fulfill 3 quality criteria in order to be used in Medical Aromatherapy with effectiveness and without toxicity.

100% pure
That is without mixing with related essential oils (from a single species or a single organ of a plant), vegetable oils, alcohol, terebinethine etc.

100% natural
That is, without mixing with synthetic or semisynthetic molecules, chemical emulsifiers, mineral oils, synthetic flavorings, preservatives, dyes, etc. (risk of allergies and toxicity).

100% whole
That is, not to be mutilated, discolored, desalinated, corrected, peroxidised.
All the fractions of distillation must lie and the distillation process must be carried out to the end.
